Aldeburgh Food and Drink Fringe Festival
The Aldeburgh Food and Drink Fringe Festival takes place from 25th September to 9th October 2010 in the days following the main weekend event of the Aldeburgh Food & Drink Festival and features fringe events throughout East Suffolk on farms, in the countryside, beaches, market towns and villages.
These include workshops, behind the scene tours of producers, progressive dinners and specially created menus at supporting restaurants and eateries, family activities, farm visits, guided walks and special cookery demonstrations. Something for everyone!

The Fringe Events are a series of activities which show case the field to fork principles, an ideal opportunity for local producers to promote their wares and unique opportunities for the public to either visit producers, explore the countryside or have new dining experiences.

Food Safari – A Hands-On Butchery Workshop with The Wild Meat Company
Saturday 2nd October 2010
Whether you are a novice or a more experienced cook, nervous of blood or keen to get cutting, Wild Meat in a day promises to be a fun day of preparing, cooking and eating venison. Robert Gooch and Ray Kent of The Wild Meat Company will share their wealth of experience about shooting, hanging and ageing game. Ray will lead a butchery class that will give you a step-by-step guide to preparing locally-shot venison.
The butchery workshop will focus on knife skills and give you some tips for preparing game at home.
After a short break you can relax a little while we demonstrate some exquisite, mouth watering game dishes as well as passing on tips, ideas and advice for cooking game in your kitchen.
You’ll leave the day with confidence and inspired to prepare your own game at home, a handful of creative recipes to impress your friends and even some of the game you have prepared yourself!

Food Safari – A wild food foray day

Discover the pleasures of wild food and see the abundance of wild herbs, vegetables, fruits, nuts and fungi all to be found close to the Suffolk coast. Our expert guides will take us to a variety of habitats at, or close, to Henham Park, nr Southwold. This is a great introduction to foraging for serious foodies; we will lean more about how to turn our finds into delicious meals and enjoy a gourmet wild food feast at The Anchor at Walberwick.
Our guide Valerie Jordan, co-founder of The Tasty Mushroom Partnership, will show you how to identify, pick and prepare the best mushrooms for the kitchen. She will be joined by Jacky Sutton Adam who will show us how to avoid picking poisonous plants & potential contamination. Jacky will also enlighten us with some historical & medicinal facts about plant. There will be plenty of time for your own exploration & questions.

Food Safari – A True Children’s Field to Fork Experience
Sunday 3rd October 2010
A true field to fork experience; kids spend the day at an organic small-holding, near Southwold on the Suffolk Coast.Children aged between 6-12 will meet the rare-breed pigs and chickens , see beehives, vegetable gardens and polytunnels before getting hands-on experience preparing their lunch.
They will make sausages and burgers from the farms own meat. Bake bread with local flour to be cooked in a wood-fired ovens. Pick salad and collect eggs to make a pudding. There will be lots to learn along the way to give children the opportunity to think more about where food comes from.
Parents will share the feast and all the family will leave inspired to try something new at home, whether that’s growing a few salad leaves on the windowsill, baking bread or even keeping a few hens.

Get the kids in the kitchen with this engaging cookery demo and supper with Eastfeast chef Paul Freeman at the established Blyford smallholding. As well as learning about where sausages come from, the children can try making them before enjoying a tasty supper. They will have a tour of the animals in the garden, see the crops growing in the field and learn where their meal came from.
Extra Information: Paul Freeman works to inspire and mentor talented children as part of the national Future Chef competition as well as leading educational sessions with Suffolk charity, Eastfeast. The Blyford-based chef is also a the first in the area to aim for self-sufficiency, when he has to buy products in, he always shops locally. Paul & Charlotte, his wife, are now in the second year promoting their organic approach and welcome Aldeburgh Festival goers.

Metfield Stores Apple Walk To Wakelyns Agroforestry Farm In Early Celebration Of Apple Day

Eddie Krutysza, our local rose and fruit tree grower, will start with apple identification outside Metfield Stores, before walking, show and tell, through the fields to Wakelyns Agroforestry, about 1 mile.The farms 60 acres are divided in to six agroforestry systems, characterised by ‘production hedges’ of mixed hardwood or fruit trees or willow coppice or hazel coppice.
The annual farm crops are rotated around the alleys that separate the production hedges. They include field trials on different aspects of cereals, potatoes and mixed vegetable cropping, see http:/www.wakelyns.co.uk.
We will return to Metfield Stores where we can enjoy a cup of hot soup and apple cake.
Metfield Stores cic (Community Interest Company) is in its 5th year of trading as a community run village shop, in a relatively small north Suffolk village, near the Waveney Valley. An important part of our stock is from our local producers and we have benefited from this outreach and collaboration.

Food Safari – A True Children’s Field to Fork Experience

A true field to fork experience; kids spend the day at an organic small-holding, near Southwold on the Suffolk Coast.Children aged between 6-12 will meet the rare-breed pigs and chickens , see beehives, vegetable gardens and polytunnels before getting hands-on experience preparing their lunch.
They will make sausages and burgers from the farms own meat. Bake bread with local flour to be cooked in a wood-fired ovens. Pick salad and collect eggs to make a pudding. There will be lots to learn along the way to give children the opportunity to think more about where food comes from.
Parents will share the feast and all the family will leave inspired to try something new at home, whether that’s growing a few salad leaves on the windowsill, baking bread or even keeping a few hens.

Metfield Stores Apple Walk To Wakelyns Agroforestry Farm In Early Celebration Of Apple Day

Eddie Krutysza, our local rose and fruit tree grower, will start with apple identification outside Metfield Stores, before walking, show and tell, through the fields to Wakelyns Agroforestry, about 1 mile.The farms 60 acres are divided in to six agroforestry systems, characterised by ‘production hedges’ of mixed hardwood or fruit trees or willow coppice or hazel coppice.
The annual farm crops are rotated around the alleys that separate the production hedges. They include field trials on different aspects of cereals, potatoes and mixed vegetable cropping, see http:/www.wakelyns.co.uk.
We will return to Metfield Stores where we can enjoy a cup of hot soup and apple cake.
Metfield Stores cic (Community Interest Company) is in its 5th year of trading as a community run village shop, in a relatively small north Suffolk village, near the Waveney Valley. An important part of our stock is from our local producers and we have benefited from this outreach and collaboration.
