Aldeburgh Festival
Aldeburgh is known world-wide for its flourishing music festival.
The Aldeburgh Festival of Music and the Arts was founded in 1948 by the composer Benjamin Britten, the singer Peter Pears and the writer-producer Eric Crozier. They centred their annual festival upon opera, but the Festival has evolved slowly over the years to encompass a wide range of music, performed year-round in a concert hall.
The concert hall of Snape Maltings is of great interest. Not only is it successful in accommodating a generous music audience, it is in fact an old converted malt house.
Aldeburgh Music is the name of the organisation in charge of the Aldeburgh Festival. They have remained true to the spirit of the three founders. They place great importance on the training and nurturing of promising young musicians. The public is able to sit in on the masterclasses of these young musicians – a definite treat to build into your visit.
