On Now until 30th April warp+weft / warp+weft: from handloom to production at Smiths Row, The Market Cross, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk IP331BT
Warp+Weft is a major contemporary weaving exhibition curated by Laura Thomas, a weaver herself and a pioneer of specialist techniques. Warp+Weft is an exploration of unexpected woven textiles by contemporary artists, all of whom have a reverence for tradition yet are embracing new technology, aesthetics and making methods.

warp+weft at smith row gallery

The exhibition shows work ranging in size from small hand held pieces, to three dimensional architectural pieces that act as sculpture, all displaying innovative techniques by artists from Suffolk to as far as Japan. A number of these pieces have been made especially for the exhibition, while another macrogauze by a Suffolk textile designer Peter Collingwood, has been exclusively loaned for this exhibition and is a piece originally made for the British Embassy in Brussels. Alongside this exhibition you can see warp+weft: from handloom to production, originally shown at The National Wool Museum in Drefach Felindre, Carmarthenshire and also curated by Laura Thomas. This exhibition showcases some of the very best British weavers who have developed their craft practice into the commercial arena through collaboration with working mills.

FREE Admission
Ipswich Art School, 1 Upper High St., Ipswich, IP1 3QH
Opening times
10.00 - 17.00 Tuesday - Sunday

How to find us
Ipswich Art School is in High Street, five minutes walk from the town centre.
The Gallery is next door to Ipswich Museum and is a ten minute walk from Christchurch Mansion. It is about 25 minutes walk from the railway station, and five minutes from Tower Ramparts bus station.

The Class of… at Ipswich Art School exhibition explores the Art School legacy by displaying work by past tutors and students together for the first time. This will let us look back through the School’s working lifetime to see how artists have developed.

Maggi Hambling headlines this exhibition of painting, drawing and sculpture from influential students and teachers from Ipswich Art School. The teachers Lawrence Self, Colin Moss, Tom Phillips and Bernard Reynolds will all be represented. Amongst the art work on display is Maggi Hambling’s heron model for the public sculpture in Brixton. Maggi who was born in Sudbury, Suffolk in1945 was a student at Ipswich Art School from 1962-64.

Maggi Hambing said, “My time at Ipswich Art School was crucial, the various disciplines of painting, drawing, sculpture and printmaking were strongly instilled in me. Each one continues to play its part in my work.”

Ipswich Art School originally opened on 10th January 1859 at the Assembly Rooms in Northgate Street, Ipswich. As the School attracted more students, it required more space. It was later given a permanent home on the High Street when the new Museum was built in 1881. This move linked the Schools of Science and Art.

In 1934 construction began on this building with its distinctive glass-roofed, octagonal gallery. It was conceived as a place to inspire, transform and educate.

Among the many artists on display is Colin Moss who was born in Ipswich in 1914 and in 1947 became a senior lecturer at Ipswich Art School. Although he is now established as a leading East Anglian artist, he was controversial when he first started. Tom Phillips’s portrait of his ex-student Brian Eno will be on display along with Norwich born Bernard Reynolds who moved to Ipswich Art School and from 1948 to 1980 was the lecturer of sculpture.

Emma Roodhouse, Curator of Art at Colchester and Ipswich Museums said, “The Class Of… is a look at the legacy of the Ipswich Art School. It was founded in 1859 and went on till 1997 at the High Street building, during that time many influential people went through its doors. Maggi Hambling, Brian Eno, Tom Phillips, Colin Moss, Lawrence Self and Eduardo Paolozzi to name a few. The exhibition begins to tell the story of those who were connected to the School through the Ipswich art collection and a number of loans. It will also be showing current work by tutors and students from Suffolk New College and University Campus Suffolk, who get to take over some of the gallery space. And for the first time we have collaborated with the UCS

Waterfront gallery so they will also be showing even more different artists from The Class Of... “

Current students and tutors from Suffolk New College and University Campus Suffolk will be taking over two of the galleries. These displays will be periodically rotated during the exhibition, this way we will see how ‘The Class of...’ is ever-changing.

For the first time the Waterfront Gallery and Colchester & Ipswich Museums join up this exhibition to show an even bigger ‘Class Of...’ At the Waterfront there will be a selection of past students work and current tutors on show. The Waterfront exhibition will be running from 29th January – 27th February and then from 10th March – 2nd April.

March 12th - May 4th - A Spring Bouquet
At the Lime Tree Gallery, Long Melford
Free Entry

A Spring Bouquet at the Lime Tree Gallery

It's a fairly obvious connection, but Spring is synonymous with flowers. So our new exhibition, starting on Saturday March 12th, is called "A Spring Bouquet", and features some of the best contemporary artists. They have painted both flowers in a landscape, and flowers in still life.

We are proud to represent a Scottish artist, Jackie Philip, for the first time. Very well known in her homeland, Jackie brings a colourful array of floral paintings. She was born in Edinburgh in 1961, and educated at Grays School of Art, Aberdeen, Wimbledon School of Art and the London Royal Academy Schools, London between 1978 and 1986. She is a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions, London, the Royal Glasgow Institute, the Royal Scottish Academy, the Paisley Art Institute & Visual Arts Scotland.

Also from Scotland, we have a series of new paintings from the ever increasingly successful, Judith Bridgland. In these works, she concentrates more on the flora. Peter King, again from Scotland, has painted a terrific set, varying from his take on classical still-life through to garden scenes, all showing his Glasgow School of Art command of colour and light.

English artist, Philip Richardson, has been with Lime Tree Gallery since our inaugural exhibition. His very painterly still life work shows the typical command of brushwork and light which brings him such respect from his peers. He has a loyal following amongst our clients who will be delighted with this new series of beautiful paintings.

Other participating artists include Irene McCann and Mhairi McGregor RSW.

21–30 May - The Art World Comes to Aldeburgh

Royal Academicians Peter Blake, Eileen Cooper, Stephen Farthing, Nigel Hall and John Hoyland are making specially commissioned works.

The international avant-garde artists Joseph Beuys and Marina Abramovic inspire performance art on the beach, guest curated by the legendary Richard Demarco.

And during the Festival in June, Mat Collishaw and Ryan Gander, two younger Internationally acclaimed artists, are making works especially for the Aldeburgh Beach South Lookout.

Also planned are exhibitions, plays, discussions, films and projects plus visits to private collections and studios, lunches, dinners and music, all relating in some way to visual art.

Building on the strong cultural heritage of Suffolk, aldeburghART’s aim is to match and complement the profile of the Aldeburgh Festival, known internationally for its innovative and classical music.

aldeburghART (21–30 May) is a new initiative by Caroline Wiseman, a modern and contemporary art dealer based in London and Suffolk. She has recently taken the South Lookout on Aldeburgh Beach as a catalyst for inspiration for artists, and is curating an exciting visual art programme in this well-loved historic tower.

Caroline Wiseman says, “We plan to make this special seaside town a centre of the British art world during aldeburghART and over the summer with innovative art which will excite visitors and involve and interest the whole community.”
