11am-5pm
Magical Framlingham Castle will undergo a transformation this Bank Holiday weekend, with the hands of time turning back to the sights, sounds and smells of Medieval England.
On Sunday 28 and Monday 29 August, visitors will embark on an exciting journey to what is arguably the most colourful and thrilling period of history and immerse themselves in 15th Century living.
With a mix of spectacular arena shows, insightful historical demonstrations and plenty of opportunities to get hands-on, Medieval Mayhem is a true family event that promises something for visitors of all ages and interests, staging a full programme of pomp and pageantry from 11am to 5pm.
Adults and children alike will be captivated by the re-enactment of a castle under siege, impressed at the precision and skill of Billmen and Archers and fascinated by Knights going about their pre-battle preparations.
Children can get involved by participating in their very own mini-battle and play a variety of games from the period. Visitors will also be able to learn medieval trades and be entertained by our Jester Peterkin in his School for Fools! And not to forget the Treasure Hunt with a 15th Century twist – a challenged not to be missed!
Offering the perfect tonic to the end of the school holidays, Medieval Mayhem allows time-travellers the chance to gain a real insight into the costume, customs and events of the period, all in the glorious surroundings of Framlingham Castle.
Lucy Hutchings, events manager for English Heritage in the London and East region, commented: “Framlingham Castle is an enchanting 12th Century fortress, famed for its stunning setting, its moat and crenulations. It truly is the perfect location for Medieval Mayhem, having lived through the many battles which make the Middle Ages so intriguing. English Heritage is thrilled to be offering its visitors an exciting and great value experience and the wide variety of activities available means that Framlingham Castle really is the only place to be this Bank Holiday weekend.”

Don’t miss two nights of spectacular outdoor screenings under the stars and amongst the trees, as we join forces with Theatre In The Forest to transform a beautiful woodland glade in Suffolk’s Rendlesham Forest into the perfect open-air cinema – a stunning location which also hosts Red Rose Chain’s summer season of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. Hot and cold drinks, beer, wine and snacks will be available from our Adnams Bar and Paddy & Scott’s refreshment stands.
On Bank Holiday Monday 29th August Douglas Fairbanks stars in the lavish silent swashbuckler ROBIN HOOD accompanied by the celebrated film accompanist Neil Brand and his band of ‘Merry Men’ with the world premiere of his new musical score. Rendlesham Forest became notorious as the site of ‘Britain’s Closest Encounter’ following an alleged UFO sighting in 1980 – making it the ideal location for a rare screening of Spielberg’s unforgettable CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND on Tuesday 30th August.
