Welcome to The Old Cannon Brewery, Bar, Brasserie and Bed & Breakfast in the heart of Bury St Edmunds.
We are proud to be a privately owned, genuinely independent free house in Bury and certainly the only brew pub in Suffolk where you can actually see beer in the making on a regular basis. Beers are made on the premises using East Anglian grown and malted barley, choice hops and the special house yeast.
Former runners-up in the Suffolk Food & Drink Awards for Best Food Pub, our Brewery Kitchen serves fresh and seasonal produce purchased from known local producers - our style is British traditional/regional with a twist
Restaurant
Our kitchen has a great reputation for serving the 'bounty of the county' all of which has been freshly prepared by our highly experienced chef Adrian Newcombe. Our brasserie menu, Cannon Fodder, changes with the seasons and has starters and main dishes for all tastes and appetites. There are at least three daily changing specials. For those with a smaller appetite, many of the most popular main courses are offered as a light main too. There's always a choice for vegetarians and, as all the food is prepared from scratch, we can usually adapt dishes for special dietary requirements too.
And, if you are still ready for more, our home made puddings and British cheeseboard are definitely worth saving space for. If puddings are not your thing, then our fabulous range of locally produced Ices are a must. Just up the road at The Manor Farm Creamery in Thurston we source a fantastic range of Ices from Criterion Ices. And then there's the deliciously flavoursome Alder Tree fruit cream ices – all hand made on a local fruit farm in Needham Market.
For busy business types looking for a quick option at lunchtimes, we offer bar snacks including baguettes with mouth watering fillings or a cheese ploughman's alongside the full menu.
Our favourite dishes tend to be made with our own ales: locally reared Red Poll cattle from the Lavenham Heritage Herd are fed on our brewery's 'spent grains', beef and ale pie or beer battered fish are other examples and we're 'big on bangers'; our famous Gunner's Daughter sausages always feature on the menu, sometimes alongside Beef & Best Bitter bangers or Black Pig ale, wild boar and apple sausages in the Autumn and Winter.
Finally, we have an incredibly popular Asian 'twist': on the first Tuesday of each month we host a Thai Banquet (see our website above for a sample menu). This three course set meal is authentically cooked to perfection by our assistant chef Som, herself from Thailand. Her dishes often crop up on the daily specials board too: sour hot Thai beef salad, venison satay and thom yum soup are particular favourites. Booking is essential!
