“EXPLORE THE RIVER STOUR BY CANOE”
Many people know that the River Stour forms the Essex/Suffolk border from Sudbury to the sea, but not many know that this beautiful river can be easily explored by canoe with expert help from River Stour Boating Community Interest Company.
The river flows through the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), passing through the picturesque villages of Bures, Boxted, Stratford St Mary and Dedham before passing Flatford Mill.
The river journey allows close-up views of historic water mills, grand houses and the locks used by horse-drawn barges when the river was an important transport link before the coming of the railways. Nowadays the river is tranquil and home to varied wildlife, including kingfishers and otters.
The River Stour Boating Community Interest Company runs 1 and 2 day guided trips by Canadian canoe from Sudbury to Cattawade, camping overnight at Rushbanks Farm, near Nayland. The trips are all-inclusive with all equipment and lunches provided and are suitable for complete novices.
2014 prices are £70 per person for a 1 day trip and £140 per person for a 2 day trip including overnight camping, if required. Discounts are available for children and large groups. Trips start from Rushbanks Farm, Wiston, CO6 4NA
