Courses in Suffolk

FOR A LIST OF COURSES IN SUFFOLK CLICK ON THE LINK AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE

Suffolk’s tranquillity lends itself to the pleasant process of learning new skills. There are many residential and non residential courses in Suffolk providing an opportunity to pick up a new interest or improve existing skills. Many courses take place in mills, historical farmhouses, old studios and famous buildings.

Combining a break with a course lasting a day, a weekend, or a week or even more is made easy by the generous accommodation options Suffolk provides. Tutors arrange for accommodation - some are even able to lodge their students under one roof in their rambling country abodes.

What can you learn? In a county with such deep artistic ties, there are many practicing artists who love welcoming newcomers and the initiated alike into their studios to learn the arts of stone sculpting, pottery, oil painting, watercolours, and other media. Some artistic courses are very specialist, for instance, if you are a player of a flute, bassoon, or clarinet, you can combine a break with the experience of playing within a quartet, guided by a music tutor.

Arts and Crafts are especially provided for – with the abundant craft skills of Suffolk you can learn just about any craft, and furniture restoration too.
For the artistic and the curious, in the rural landscape of Dedham Vale, at Flatford Mill, in the buildings painted by John Constable, the National Trust runs arts-based courses for all age-groups.

But if you fancy applying the Made in Suffolk label to something you've made yourself, come along to one of the fantastic courses on offer in the county. You could go home with a thatched cottage under your arm

if you go along to Assington Mill where they run a range of fantastic courses from straw bale building, to water divining and gilding.

Those are some of the courses available as courses in Suffolk, but there are many other tutors who run weekend and holiday courses that you can book independently, and arrange your own accommodation from the fantastic range on offer in Suffolk, from self-catering cottages and hotels to farmhouse rooms and B&Bs.

For example, Flatford Mill is leased to the Field Studies Council and runs diverse 2 and 3 day courses in bookbinding, willowcraft, green woodworking, natural studies, digital imaging, and of course, being a site that inspired John Constable, painting and drawing. At Belstead house you can learn archaeology, history, genaeology and calligraphy, among other subjects.

If you prefer something a little less tranquil then Lakenheath Clay Target Centre or Suffolk Moto Park are the places for you! Try Clay pigeon shooting for the day and see how many you can hit - it's not as easy as it looks!
