Brass-Rubbing Workshop - Tuesday 1st June – Friday 4th June
Sessions at 11am 12pm 1.30pm 2.30pm and 3.30pm
Come along to Christchurch Mansion, Ipswich between Tuesday 1st and Friday 4th June and work with local professional artist Lesley Nicole Benneworth in these 40 minute workshops to create your very own beautiful brass rubbing to take home.
You will find out more about Monumental Brasses. Who made them? How and why did brass rubbing come to be such a popular past time? And discover the best technique for reproducing brass rubbings!
Monumental brasses are engraved memorials used in churches in the early part of the 13th century. They took the place of monuments carved in stone or wood. Many were made from brass which was laid into the pavement, forming no obstruction in the space required for the services of the church. They speedily came into general use, and continued to be a favourite style of memorial for three centuries. You can tell a lot about a person from their Monumental Brass, what will you discover about people from the past?
Mel Hollis Learning Officer at Colchester and Ipswich Museum Service said, “Once you look at the engravings properly and realise that they depict real people they draw you in, just as old photographs do.”
So come and join us at Christchurch Mansion between Tuesday 1st and Friday 4th June to create your very own brass rubbing to take home. Workshop sessions are at 11am, 12pm, 1.30pm, 2.30pm and 3.30pm at a cost of £1.50 per child. These events are very popular, so booking is essential. Drop-in and Draw at Ipswich Town Hall Galleries
Wednesday 2nd June - 10am-12pm and 1pm-4pm
FREE Event
Be inspired by our recent exhibition of Colin Moss and get creative and challenge your drawing skills in our FREE Drop In and Draw event! You can join in and have fun with all the activities for free; they will engage your imagination and encourage you to think ‘out of the box’.
Try drawing blindfolded, or drawing something BIG on a tiny piece of paper. Could you draw a picture without taking your pencil off the page? Have fun drawing a self portrait or someone else’s portrait, try illustrating a favourite song, or drawing with something other than a pen or pencil. The possibilities are endless!
As an art teacher Colin Moss always tried to get his students to draw in different ways, a skill he would have needed during the war when he designed camouflage for the army. Now you can be inspired by his work in the gallery whilst you create your own master piece to take home.
