Music Concerts in Suffolk  March 2015
Wednesday 4 March
Trio Da Kali
8.00pm
The Apex, Bury St Edmunds
The new generation of griot soul

The three musicians of Trio Da Kali hail from the Mande culture of Mali, from a heritage of distinguished griots, the caste of specialist hereditary musical artisans. Aiming to showcase neglected repertoires and performance styles of the griots, they bring a fresh, contemporary, creative twist to their musical art, breathing new life back into this ancient tradition. Their performances offer a rare glimpse into the soul of the art of the griot, celebrating the African continent’s finest, most subtle and sublime music.

Auspiciously, the trio’s first international appearance was at the BBC Proms in summer 2013; they have since gone on to collaborate with the celebrated Kronos Quartet, and were most recently seen with Toumani Diabate at last year’s London Jazz Festival.

FOLIE À DEUX
A madness shared by two

Composer Emily Hall

Librettist Sjón
Director Frederic Wake-Walker

Vocals Sofia Jernberg and Finnur Bjarnason
Harp Helen Sharp
Electro-magnetic harp John-Paul Gandy

Insanity, electricity and love collide in a sonic voyage into the shared psychosis known as ‘folie à deux’, where a delusion is transmitted from one person to another.

A woman is struggling to connect with her lover. He believes that the pylon outside their house has a special power. His delusion passes on to her and, as sparks fly, their madness takes hold.

Part staged performance,
part concept album, Folie à Deux
is a lyrical investigation into love and loneliness within a relationship. Songs are woven together
for two singers, an acoustic
harp and a specially created electro-magnetic harp.

Folie à Deux is a collaboration between British composer
Emily Hall, Icelandic writer
Sjón (lyricist to Björk) and features vocals from Swedish jazz artist Sofia Jernberg and Icelandic tenor Finnur Bjarnason.
Ticket Prices: £15, £7.50 for under 25's

Charpentier ''David and Jonathan''
6.00pm
St Peter’s, Sudbury
Marc-Antoine Charpentier, long under the shadow of his rival Jean-Baptiste Lully, is now recognised as the greatest French composer of the seventeenth century, equivalent to Henry Purcell, his near contemporary. We have performed a number of his major works over the years, including his popular Midnight Mass and the chamber opera Actéon, and now we present a rare complete live performance one of his greatest works, the sacred opera David et Jonathas.

Peter Holman’s vivid performances of seventeenth-century music have delighted audiences SVF and further afield for many years. In this concert he is joined by a number of our regular soloists (including Daniel Auchincloss singing the two roles for haute-contre or high tenor) and our resident ensembles.

‘A gripping drama … highlighted by Charpentier’s dazzlingly innovative and powerful score’ – ArtsBoston
