Charpentier ''David and Jonathan''
6.00pm
St Peter’s, Sudbury
Marc-Antoine Charpentier, long under the shadow of his rival Jean-Baptiste Lully, is now recognised as the greatest French composer of the seventeenth century, equivalent to Henry Purcell, his near contemporary. We have performed a number of his major works over the years, including his popular Midnight Mass and the chamber opera Actéon, and now we present a rare complete live performance one of his greatest works, the sacred opera David et Jonathas.

Peter Holman’s vivid performances of seventeenth-century music have delighted audiences SVF and further afield for many years. In this concert he is joined by a number of our regular soloists (including Daniel Auchincloss singing the two roles for haute-contre or high tenor) and our resident ensembles.

‘A gripping drama … highlighted by Charpentier’s dazzlingly innovative and powerful score’ – ArtsBoston

Anneke Scott (natural horn) & Steven Devine (piano)
6.00pm

“Songs of Love, War and Melancholy” celebrates the launch of Anneke Scott and Steven Devine’s new disc (Resonus Classics), and includes original works by Jacques-François Gallay, a musician considered the last great natural horn virtuoso, and his contemporaries Czerny, Rossini, Mendelssohn and Moscheles. These virtuosic compositions are all strongly influenced by both opera and lieder and their compositions support Gallay’s firm belief that the natural horn was “another voice which sings”.

The “Songs of Love, War and Melancholy” tour visits a number of venues across the UK that boast historic pianos by makers such as Érard, Pleyel,
 Broadwood and Blüthner which partner
early 19th century horns by Raoux.
