The Saturdays at Thetford Forest 9th July 2010
The Saturdays have announced a forest gig this summer in East Anglia as part of Forestry Commission Live Music - a series of concerts by an eclectic mix of acts in spectacular woodland locations around the country.
In less than two years, a combination of nifty, killer tunes, super-tight performances and pure, hard graft has taken The Saturdays: Frankie, Mollie, Rochelle, Una and Vanessa from bright-eyed pop ingénues to permanent fixtures on the UK charts. Hit singles ‘Forever Is Over and ‘Ego’ from their latest album ‘Wordshaker’ follow fast on the heels of classics like ‘Up, ‘Issues’, ‘If This Is Love’ and ‘Work’ from their platinum debut album ‘Chasing Lights’.
Commenting on the date for The Saturdays, Mollie King said ‘We‘ve never played a gig in a forest before – I feel like Maid Marian. It sounds like fun and we are really looking forward to it, I’ll keep an eye out for Robin Hood!”
Forestry Commission Live Music introduces some music fans to a woodland environment for the first time. Many of them come back to enjoy the beautiful surroundings for healthy and fun outdoor recreation including walking, mountain biking and watching wildlife.
The Saturdays will be performing at:
Thetford Forest, Nr Brandon, Suffolk, Friday 9th July
Tickets £26.50 (subject to booking fee) go on sale at 9.00am Friday 29th January from the Forestry Commission Box Office tel. 01842 814612, by clicking on the link above and going to the Forestry Commission's website, or over the counter from the venue.
Opera in the Orchard comes to Orford raising funds to change lives
PURCELL’s Dido & Aeneas will be performed in Orford on Saturday 10th July in a bid to raise much needed funds for the Macmillan Nurses. The Opera is one of the English baroque composer Henry Purcell’s first all-sung operas and is among the earliest of English Operas.
This Opera is a love story telling of the love of Dido, Queen of Carthage and the Trojan hero Aeneas and her despair at his abandonment. The project is being co-ordinated by local resident and prominent professional musician Jim McLeod. The event entitled ‘Opera in the Orchard’ is hosted by The Jolly Sailor in Quay Street in Orford and the candlelit performance will be outside in their orchard which has views over Orfordness and beyond.
It’s being conducted by Philip Simms and the five soloists and eight chorus will perform the Opera in a contemporary style along with a string quartet, base and harpsichord. Visitors to this event are invited to bring along their own rugs or chairs to sit on along with their own picnics although the Jolly Sailor are also offering to prepare special champagne picnics for those who’d prefer to dine out in style on the night.
There’s also a garden bar which will open for business from 6pm and the performance which begins at 7pm is likely to last just over an hour. The event is being held in aid of the Macmillan Nurses who do such excellent work improving the lives of those living with cancer - a charity very close to the hearts of many of the Orford residents.
Tickets are priced at £20 each and available in advance by phoning The Jolly Sailor, Orford or visiting their website for more details.

Katie Melua at Thetford Forest 10th July 2010

Katie Melua has announced an East Anglian date for the summer as part of the Forestry Commission Live Music series.
With nearly 10 million combined sales generated from her first 3 albums, ‘Call Off The Search’, ‘Piece By Piece’ and ‘Pictures’ Katie was, without doubt, one of the greatest musical success stories of the last decade.
Now, having spent 2009 writing songs for her 4th studio album including teaming up with song-writing partner Guy Chambers (perhaps best known for Robbie Williams’ ‘Angels’ and ‘Millennium’), Katie is currently in the studio finishing the record with producer William Orbit who produced Madonna’s award-winning album ‘Ray Of light’. Orbit has been running a commentary of the studio sessions on Twitter and Facebook including “this is shaping up to be one of the finest things I’ve ever been involved with. I am hearing what can only be described as magic”. The as-yet-untitled album will be released in May.
Katie Melua will be performing at:
Thetford Forest, Nr Brandon, Suffolk, Saturday 10th July
Tickets £33.00 (subject to booking fee) go on sale at 9.00am Friday 12th February from the Forestry Commission box office tel 01842 814612 or by clicking on the link above and going to the Forestry Commission's website.
CELEBRATION OF 20TH CENTURY ENGLISH CHORAL MUSIC 10th JULY AT SNAPE MALTINGS CONCERT HALL
Stowmarket Chorale, Eye Bach Choir & English Arts Chorale combine to perform Walton’s exotic Belshazzar’s Feast, which contrasts completely with Vaughan Williams’ sweeping Sea Symphony, conducted by their musical director Leslie Olive. The popular well known local soloists are lyrical baritone Mark Oldfield, who will sing both works, and soprano Julie Roberts, who will join him in the Sea Symphony.

We are very pleased to welcome Mark Oldfield as the baritone soloist for our Snape concert, when he will be singing in both Belshazzar’s Feast and A Sea Symphony. Over the years he has been a popular soloist with all three choirs taking part in this concert. He sang with Stowmarket Chorale in Bach’s St Matthew Passion in in St Edmundsbury Cathedral in 2005, and also performed the same work with Eye Bach Choir very recently in March 2010. He has also performed Handel’s Messiah with both Eye and the English Arts Chorale.
Mark grew up in Stowmarket and went on to study at the Colchester Institute, the Britten-Pears School in Snape, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the opera school of the Royal College of Music. His versatile lyric baritone has since taken him all over the world, performing on the opera stage with a repertoire than includes Mozart, Rossini, Puccini and Britten, and on the concert platform in such varied places as Lagos, Nigeria with Carmina Burana and the Barbican in London with Handel’s Chandos Anthems under Sir Charles Mack-erras. Mark also gives song recitals for music clubs and festivals, and is currently touring a programme called “Flights of Fancy and Fantasy.”

Soprano Julie Roberts will be joining Mark for A Sea Symphony, and we are delighted to welcome her again after she stepped in at very short notice to sing the Brahm’s Requiem for us in St Edmundsbury Cathedral in 2008. Julie has a wide ranging repertoire with engage-ments covering opera, oratorio, musical theatre and recital programmes. Her studies have included opera at Morley College and the English National Opera’s Bayliss Programme, and recent performances have included Pamina in Mozart’s Magic Flute, Belinda in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas and many heroines in Gilbert and Sullivan operetta. She says her most demand-ing role to date though is becoming Mum to baby Madeleine!

A group of all-singing, all-strumming Ukulele players (the clue is in the name), using instruments bought with loose change, which holds that all genres of music are available for reinterpretation, as long as they are played on the Ukulele.
A concert by the Ukulele Orchestra is a funny, virtuosic, twanging, awesome, foot-stomping obituary of rock-n-roll and melodious light entertainment featuring only the "bonsai guitar" and a menagerie of voices in a collision of post-punk performance and toe-tapping oldies.
