'A Life in Poetry' with local poet Neil Powell.

Thursday 18th March from 7.30 pm

Orford based poet, biographer and critic Neil Powell reads a selection of his poems and talks about his life as a writer. His most recent collections, Selected Poems and A Halfway House, inhabit, in Charles Tomlinson’s phrase, ‘a peopled landscape’: friends are remembered and celebrated against the recurring backgrounds of the Surrey Hills and the Suffolk coast.

Description

The Jolly Sailor is a great 16th century pub, restaurant, Inn and Art Gallery all in one! So something for everyone in this delightful Suffolk village near Aldeburgh.

Best of all is the food, locally sourced, freshly cooked with a menu of unspoilt favourites.

Children, animals and well-behaved humans are welcome; we have a lovely big garden which when all the planting is completed will be a haven for birds, bees and butterflies. There will a children’s play tower and camping in the orchard.

The Jolly Sailor is an excellent base for walkers, sailors, fisherman and birdwatchers, painters, photographers or those simply in search of solitude and the sound of the sea under a huge Suffolk sky.

From the garden and orchard are views of the marshes and saltings, located next to the working quay on the River Ore, opposite Orford Ness and close to the marshy bird sanctuary Havergate Island, where avocets breed.

So do join us for Log fires, unbelievable food, dominoes and shove-ha’penny or just read the papers and relax.

Great Food
• Food can be enjoyed in the main bar, the Snug, the Chart Room which is decorated with maritime charts, the lounge or the newly opened Thames Room with its recently exposed 17th century flooring, or, of course the Garden
• Current menus can be seen on our website (see link above) which emphasise fish from our local fisherman, Pinneys’ and Binsteads who land their catch on Orford Quay. There will always be beer battered fish & chips, sea bass and in season Mussels, Crabs and Lobsters.

The east wind may blow but the Jolly Sailor winter warmer menu will keep the cockles of your heart warm and everything else in between.

So join us for roaring fires, wonderful food and good company and a game or two to keep the little grey cells alive…

Great Drink
• Adnams Ales are famous for their distinctive range of beers for discerning drinkers. Specialist seasonal beers are always available including Old Ale, Oyster and the seriously heavy Tally Ho!

Comfortable Stay
After all our wonderful food and drink you won't want to leave, especially when you see
• Four stunningly refurbished double rooms with ensuite rooms, the deepest roll-top baths, snuggly duvets and fluffy towels
• Children’s Z-Beds, baby monitors, toy boxes, TV with DVDs
Pricing for Bed and Breakfast: Sunday - Thursday £75, Friday - Saturday £85
So book now! We only have four rooms!!
