Poems about Suffolk
My favourite thing about Suffolk
by Jill Harrison

My favourite thing about Suffolk,
Is it the people, the places, the sky?
It’s impossible to come up with a singular,
And here are my reasons why:
Suffolk Punches, Thetford forest, Adnams beer,
Dedham Mill, Walberswick, Southwold Pier.
Its 22 windmills, The House in the Clouds,
Alton Water flowing, far from the crowds.
One hundred and sixty species of birds -
Around Sizewell B, that’s just absurd.
Maggie’s scallop in Aldeburgh,
With its face to the sea.
Its fifty miles of coastline,
The second wealthiest monastery.
Suffolk Pink cottages standing apart,
Martello Towers to resist Bonaparte.
Newmarket race course and galloping hooves,
Pretty, quaint Dalham with all its thatched roofs.
The perfect elevation for bicycle rides,
Places to watch the fabulous spring tides.
The way that we use the Suffolk vernacular,
The view from Orford Castle, it’s just spectacular.
Standing here in Suffolk, I’m sure there is more,
But I don’t want to regale you and then be a bore.
So I’ll finish with the Euroscope and the wind in its sails,
Gainsborough and Constable and pints of real ale!
