"Best Restaurant in the UK for use of Local Produce" according to the Good Food Guide, and Restaurant Magazine Best "Sausage and Mash" for our local free range Pork and Black Pudding sausages
Located at the top of Southwold High Street, Sutherland House is one of the oldest and most historically important buildings in the town. This fascinating building houses our award winning seafood restaurant with rooms so make sure you have a stay or night out at Sutherland House on your agenda when visiting Southwold! We have been awarded two rosettes by the AA, been recognized by the Sunday Telegraph as one of the top 150 restaurants in the country, and we are included in the good food guide for the third year running. Our food is seasonal and locally sourced - we even print "food miles" on our menu to quantify this. Some of our vegetables and soft fruit has only 400 "food yards" on it as comes from our own allotment in Southwold! The cycle is complete as we compost all of our vegetable peelings at the allotment in an attempt to reduce our carbon footprint as far as possible.
Although Sutherland House has won many awards for the quality of its seafood, we are also a neighbourhood restaurant serving local food for local people. Guests are welcome to drop in for a glass of wine and a plate of tapas in front of the fire (in winter); a gourmet sandwich; locally caught fish served fresh daily; home-made Black Pudding sausages and mash, or a Modern British dish – or come for a three course meal. We offer affordable as well as more expensive dishes, ranging from £5.95 for a sandwich to £23.50 for a main course.
Sutherland House has been awarded 3 gold medals for pork based products using Jimmy Butlers Blythburgh free range pork, and has come 3rd overall in Best Innovative Pork Category for our Black Pudding Fritters in 2008.
Please view our sample menus on our website to get an idea of what we are currently presenting for lunch and dinner. These menus change regularly due to the availability of produce so may not represent exactly what we have on offer when you visit. We will be delighted to send current menus to you if you request them.
Accommodation at Sutherland House Hotel
The bedrooms at Sutherland House Hotel are totally unique as the House dates from 1450 and many of original features are still visible. History lovers will be delighted with the pargetted ceilings ( from c1660), beams, original foot wide elm floorboards (c1450), fireplaces, and a medieval window. However Sutherland House is much more than a piece of history - we have comfortable, contemporary furnishings, zoffany fabrics and design classics, such as Le Corbuisier Chaise Longues and Eileen Grey coffee tables to blend the best of the old and new.
Come and sleep under the same ceiling as a past King of England, luxuriate in a six feet long double ended slipper bath set on a plinth in the middle of a beamed, floorboarded room or escape to the suite which occupies the top floor on the entire footprint of the old house.
The Hotel is located on the high street of this delightful English seaside town, which means that during your entire stay you never need to get in your car again! There are many shops, boutiques and art galleries to visit. The harbour (where we get the majority of our fish), Southwold Pier and the seafront are all within easy walking distance.
We are proud to announce that we have received 5 Gold Stars from the AA in the Restaurant with Rooms category, which puts us in the top 10% of these properties in the country.
For an unforgettable meal, luxurious short break or first class function facilities, Sutherland House Hotel and Restaurant in the heart of Southwold will be hard to beat, so call us now to book your table!
