Stoke by Nayland

Stoke By Nayland

Stoke by Nayland is a wonderfully quaint village, making it the ideal retreat from the stresses and strains of city-living.

Stoke by Nayland stands on a hill overlooking the Stour and Box river valleys, and is around 1.5 miles from Nayland. Close by are Hadleigh, Sudbury, Castle Hedlingham and East Bergholt. It is also close to the border with Essex in a strikingly attractive area that is referred to as Constable Country, named after the Suffolk-born Romantic painter who lived nearby and filled many of his painting with local scenery.

St. Mary Church, Stoke by Nayland

In this small-but-perfectly-formed village, visitors will discover a great many cottages, plus timber-framed houses and building such as the Village Hall and the old Guildhall. These attractive buildings all surround a large recreation field which makes up the centre of the village. One of the highlights to any visit to Stoke by Nayland is St. Mary’s church. This fantastic building has retained much of the original structure and features from when it was rebuilt in the fifteenth century, and it appeared in several of Constable’s paintings.
