Suffolk Tourist Guide offering video to advertisers
STOP PRESS! - Video launched April 2010 - see it here -
Suffolk Video
You may have seen that more and more websites have videos linked to them now, to give a visual demonstration of the product or service on offer. One has recently caught my eye - The Fox Inn and Restaurant, Bury (click on the View Video link on their advert)
This seems a great example of online promotion - using the internet to sell The Fox, it's food and drink offering and stylish rooms etc.

We know that people buy with their eyes and also that more and more people are going online to begin their search for information (83% of UK households start with an internet search when they're looking for all sorts of information, from holidays to plumbers). So we need to produce something online that's also very visual to sell Suffolk and all it has to offer.

Why now? 2010 could be another good year for Suffolk tourism as the ‘staycation’ trend is no flash in the pan but a result of holiday attitudes shifting, according to recent research. Almost three quarters (72%) of British people are likely to take a break in England in 2010, a survey by VisitEngland revealed, and 95% of those who holidayed in England in 2009 are likely to do so again next year. In addition, the July 2009 results from the UK Tourism Survey (UKTS) showed that the number of holiday trips taken by UK residents within England were up by an impressive 40% in comparison to July 2008; amounting to almost two million more holiday trips taken.

So we need to make sure Suffolk has a strong presence online to compete with Cornwall, the Lake District, Bournemouth etc to ensure we increase our share of this growing 'staycation' market. Also with £ still weak against the Euro we can sell ourselves to the growing overseas visitor market.

STATS AND FACTS
Below is a excerpt from a recent press release from a US digital market intelligence Company called Comscore, that reports that in November 2009 over 30 billion videos were watched online in the US, and that growth rates amongst all the main broadcast sites, like YouTube (owned by Google), were phenomenal. This reflects the increasing consumer demand for video. UK stats on video viewing figures are hard to come by but time spent online has exceeded time spent watching TV for the average UK household, so the trend is clear.
Press Release from www.comscore.com
November Sees Number of U.S. Videos Viewed Online Surpass 30 Billion for First Time on Record
RESTON, VA, January 5, 2010 – comScore, Inc. (NASDAQ: SCOR), a leader in measuring the digital world, today released November 2009 data from the comScore Video Metrix service, showing that more than 170 million U.S. Internet users watched online video during the month. Online video viewing continued to reach record levels in November with nearly 31 billion videos viewed during the month, and Google Sites accounting for 39 percent of all videos viewed online in the U.S.
YouTube served 12 billion video views during November, up 137% year over year. Unique visitors to the site are strong as well, up 32%.
Even more impressive, YouTube is clobbering the competition. The next nine most popular sites combined only served up a quarter of the total views in November that YouTube served. Their growth is slower too, year over year, they've grown 86%

The offer from Suffolk Guides
So I've got together with the bright fellows at
Z Solutions who produced the video for The Fox Inn to put together a video for Suffolk. The quality of their work is clear and the owner of The Fox, Sheila Blackmore, was delighted with their work and professionalism. Here's what she has to say -
You asked me to comment on how it was for The Fox working with ZSolutions.
“I can honestly say they are the most delightful guys to work with, they are helpful, friendly, and professional, it was also a fun experience. They guided us through the technical bits and we are very pleased with the end result. It gives potential customers the opportunity to sample not only the atmosphere and quality we offer should they wish to book a table or to stay at The Fox but also highlight our unique selling points at a glance.
I would recommend them without any hesitation, which is not something any of us can often say with such confidence”
Z Solutions are based in Bury and Ipswich so they know Suffolk very well and they're as excited as I am about putting together a 3-4 minute video that captures what Suffolk has to offer and the range of Attractions, Hotels, Restaurants, Activities etc etc and things they can do here. The video will be uploaded to YouTube with a link to it from every page of the Suffolk Guides (similar to how the Suffolk Brochure is linked now)
We'd like to offer clients of the Guides the opportunity to participate in the Suffolk Video as this will be a more cost effective option than producing your own video. We will produce a 15 or 30 second video for your business, which easily be uploaded to YouTube and then linked to from your website (ie. no ongoing hosting costs). You can also use the Suffolk Video with your own Video, so that the first part of the video on your website is all about your business, and then the Suffolk Video follows which will sell Suffolk and why people should visit. There will be no cost to you for using the Suffolk Video on your website.
These are the options for your Video -
•For a 15 second video from still photos*
•1) If all imagery is supplied (ca 12 images), the cost would be £300 + VAT
•2) If imagery is not available and Z Solutions come to your location and shoot and edit stills, the cost would be £475 + VAT
•For a 30 second video from still photos*
•1) If imagery is supplied (ca 20 images) the cost would be £400 + VAT
•2) For Z Solutions to shoot the images and edit them into a video would cost £585 + VAT.
•For a single shot image of your business (supplied to us by you) to be used as the title page of the Suffolk Video on your website, the cost would be £50. For the image to also be used in the Video would cost £25
•For 30 seconds of pure video footage taken on location the cost would be £770 + VAT
These costs include a title page, enhancing and re-formating stills as appropriate, approvals of shots/video taken on location before leaving the location; use of professional level Canon digital video cameras and stills cameras etc.
For a single still photo* of your business (supplied to us by you) to be included in the Suffolk Video the cost is just £50.
* You might have noticed from The Fox video that several shots were actually still images but the way that Z Solutions scanned the images in front of the camera makes them appear to be moving images.
There are lots of advantages in producing Videos in this way -
- it's cheaper as we're 'bulk buying',
- we can extend the online coverage of Suffolk,
- work with local experts who come highly recommended,
- search engine optimisation for your website (Forrester reports that, "On the keywords for which Google offers video results, any given video in the index stands about a 50 times better chance of appearing on the first page of results than any given text page in the index.")
TIMETABLE
The plan is to get together a 'storyboard' for Suffolk in February, shoot the footage in March and edit and release it in April. We'd like to get it broadcast on YouTube before Easter but that might be a bit tight as we are dependant on weather conditions for outside shots.
TECHNICAL
For clients supplying their own images the preferable size and resolution of these should be no less than 3200 x 1800 pixels and over 500kb per shot. Any less and they could tend to pixelate and apprear slightly out of focus on the screen. These images would be required in landscape format.
For clients supplying images the best combination is generally 1/3 exterior shots, 1/3 internal public spaces and 1/3 bedrooms/bathrooms.
