The National Trust In Suffolk

The National Trust in Suffolk plays an invaluable role in preserving history and unspoilt countryside. From inspiring historic houses, gardens and parkland to dramatic coastlines and nature reserves, there’s something for everyone. In Suffolk the National Trust has a whole range of properties and sites, so you're sure to find someting of interest. Many of the National Trust properties in Suffolk have activities and events throughout the year, so please click on the links below to take you to the displays for each of the properties to find out more about them.

You could start with a visit to Ickworth House, above, near Bury St Edmunds. It is a Georgian jewel set in ‘Capability’ Brown landscape, where you can discover the eccentric world of the Hervey family. Ickworth House, Park and Gardens

Or follow in Beatrix Potter’s footsteps at Melford Hall , a romantic Tudor building set in Long Melford one of Suffolk’s prettiest villages.

Nearby you can discover a wealth of history at Lavenham Guildhall, (see top picture) where you can trace the rise and fall of the wool trade. The Guildhall is situated in the heart of another of Suffolk's pretty and historic villages, Lavenham, one of Britain's best preserved mediaeval villages, and well worth a visit.

Don’t miss Sutton Hoo, a burial site of Anglo-Saxon kings. Walk in the footsteps of warriors, pagans and Kings and discover this treasure for yourself.

Or surrender yourself to the beautiful Suffolk coastline. Take a glimpse into paradise at Dunwich Heath, with its magnificent displays of heather in the summer months and unspoilt beach.

Discover the secrets at Orford Ness National Nature Reserve, which combines the timelessness of wild nature with fascinating Cold War history.

Or spend the day in Flatford Mill, home of the beautiful 16th-century thatched Bridge Cottage (see picture below), which is located in the heart of Dedham Vale. This is the famous location for John Constable's idyllic pastoral paintings, and visitors are invited to attend the exhibition held in the cottage.
