IT’S ALL BLACK AND WHITE FOR RETURN TO AVOCET ISLAND
Famous as the Island of Avocets, RSPB Havergate Island will be open to visitors for a special weekend searching for these handsome wading birds on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 September.
Access to Havergate is restricted to just a handful of visitor trips per year, and the Island of Avocets weekend is the last opportunity this year to join the wardens for a guided tour of this unique island.
Avocets, the bird on the RSPB logo, re-colonised the Suffolk coast in 1947 when they nested on Havergate Island and at RSPB Minsmere nature reserve. Suffolk remains the best county to see these elegant black-and-white birds with their long blue-grey legs and delicate upturned bill, which flock to our estuaries after breeding.
Havergate Site Manager, Aaron Howe, said, “Up to 1000 avocets have been counted on Havergate in September. It’s an incredible sight to watch the flocks swirling through the air, flashing brilliant white in the sunshine, or feeding in unison in shallow water.
“It’s not just avocets though, as visitors will also see a wide variety of other wading birds, such as dunlins, redshanks and curlews, as well as spoonbills, little egrets, ducks and maybe one of our barn owls, which have bred successfully again this year.”
Boats depart Orford Quay at 9 am or 1 pm each day for a four-hour tour of the island. Places are limited so must be booked in advance by calling the Minsmere visitor centre on 01728 648281. Tickets cost £15, or £12 for RSPB members, with no discount for children.
SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 5TH - ART ON THE PROM 2010
Art on the Prom, Felixstowe’s seventh annual contemporary art fair, takes place this year on Sunday 5th September along the picturesque sea front promenade, between 10am and 4pm.

Attracting artists from every genre and discipline, the fair showcases a myriad of original art works for everyone to enjoy. So far this year the event has attracted a record number of 85 artists who will be displaying and selling their original works, in which painting, drawing, glass, ceramics, photography and jewellery are all represented.
There will also be a variety of entertainment and workshops available for visitors to take part in. Taking place in the Spa Gardens, workshops include willow sculpting, decorative painting, tie dye, ceramics and painting. These workshops are open to all, and Art of the Prom also has facilities to support children with disabilities. All the workshops are free to enjoy, so why not drop in and try your hand at a new artistic skill?
Entertainment includes live music, from the prize winning Co-op brass band, the popular barrel organ and contemporary acoustic bands – so there will be something for everyone’s taste. There will also be a children’s art competition, and a variety of entertainers such as stilt walkers, jugglers or magicians.

During June and July, Art on the Prom artists have been leading workshops in local schools and the children’s work will be on display on September 5th. There is also a children’s competition to be judged on the day.
Art on the Prom is supported by grants from local councils as well as sponsorship from local businesses. It is a non-profit making event which aims to promote economic well-being and foster a pride in the community.

MEET THE AUTHOR: LEADING AUTHOR VISITS MINSMERE
One of the UK’s leading writers of natural history books, Richard Mabey, will be at RSPB Minsmere on Sunday 5 September to sign copies of his highly acclaimed books, including The Barley Bird: Notes on the Suffolk Nightingale.
Richard has been hailed by The Times as ‘Britain’s greatest living nature writer’, as well as being a popular naturalist, conservationist and broadcaster. He’ll be at Minsmere from 12.30 pm to 4.30 pm, chatting to visitors about his work and signing copies of his books, many of which will be available to purchase on the day.
Speaking about why he writes, and what it means to him, Richard said, “I get an astonishing emotional joy out of the material aspects of the natural world. It is the colour of a feather, the sound of a song that is important to me.”
RSPB Minsmere Visitor Centre Manager, Tim Rose said, “Richard Mabey’s books are always popular as they offer superb insights into the natural world yet are easy to read, helping to bring natural history into many people’s homes. We’re really excited to welcome Richard to Minsmere, giving visitors the chance to discuss his work and meet the man himself.”
Among Richard Mabey’s acclaimed publications are Food for Free, The Unofficial Countryside, The Common Ground and Nature Cure, his autobiographical account of recovery from depression and his relationship with landscape and nature. and was awarded the Whitbread Prize for his biography of Gilbert White. His book, The Barley Bird: Notes on the Suffolk Nightingale was published in spring 2010.
Richard devised, researched and wrote the ground-breaking best seller, Flora Britannica, which won the British Book Awards’ Illustrated Book of the Year and the Botanical Society of the British Isles’ President’s Award and was runner-up for the BP Natural World Book Prize.

Friday 10 to Tuesday 14 September 2010 - Elizabethan tower open to the public
Freston Tower, near Ipswich, Suffolk

As part of Suffolk Heritage Open Days.
Building preservation charity the Landmark Trust is opening to the public Freston Tower, a six-storey Elizabethan tower overlooking the estuary of the River Orwell. The building will be open from 10am to 4pm on Friday 10 to Monday 13 September, and from 10am to 1pm on Tuesday 14 September, as part of the nationwide Heritage Open Days weekend.
These free open days give people an opportunity to see inside this historic local building and to learn more about its history and restoration. A free information leaflet will be available. All are welcome to attend these open days and there is no need to book.

Freston Tower, on the south bank of the River Orwell, is one of the most intriguing towers in England. Its purpose and date were always a question of debate, but testing of selected timbers in the tower has dated its construction to 1578/9. It is known that the tower was built while the manor of Freston was in the ownership of Thomas Gooding, a wealthy Ipswich merchant and mercer. Gooding played an active part in the affairs of sixteenth-century Ipswich and succeeded in making his mark on local architecture. Gooding was also granted the right to bear a coat of arms in 1576, which may have provided the excuse to build this fine tower. The plaques on the south elevation probably displayed his arms originally, which showed six red lion heads, separated by a horizontal red bar on a yellow ground.
The restoration of Freston Tower was completed by the Landmark Trust in 2004, supported by grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund and English Heritage. It is now available to let as self-catering holiday accommodation for up to four people. The rental income pays for the building’s on-going maintenance.

For directions please contact the Landmark Trust on 01628 825925 (office open Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm, and Saturday 10am to 4pm). Further information about the Landmark Trust can be found at www.landmarktrust.org.uk.

The theme this year will be ‘The Normans’, with a replica Norman boat, historical re-enactments and it is hoped to feature a replica of the Bayeux Tapestry created by local schools. Shanty groups will play, and there will be a large exhibition and a free nautical music show in the former Whisstocks Boat Sheds. And everything except the food and drink will be free.

The event will run from approximately 1:30pm until 3:45pm, starting and finishing at the Royal Green in Lowestoft, all in aid of Cancer Research UK. Participants can choose to either walk, jog or run along a 3 or 5 mile course. Waterwalk is open to all; male, female, young and old. Even dog walkers are welcome.
As this is a charity event we do ask participants to raise money through sponsorship, however there is no minimum sponsorship as every penny really does count.

At the end of the Waterwalk event we will hold our very memorable and inspiring Message Of Hope ceremony. This is where we take some time to remember those we have lost to cancer, those battling cancer, and of course the many that have survived cancer. Instead of the traditional minute silence, music will be played and we will release hundreds of balloons in to the sky, all with attached messages.
We ask for a small registration fee to cover the administration costs of staging the event, this way we can ensure that 100% of the Sponsorship and Message Of Hope money goes to Cancer Research UK.

Saturday 25th September between 9.30am to 4pm - Popular Woodbridge Market Returns The popular Woodbridge Vintage & Modern Market returns to the town’s Market Hill and Shire Hall.

The market, described as a little slice of Spitalfields Market in the relaxed atmosphere of a classic Suffolk market town, has quickly become established as a great place to pick up some highly unusual pieces for the home. An eclectic selection of stallholders from across Suffolk and beyond its borders sells a wide range of goods, from classic examples of Twentieth Century furniture, such as Ercol and G-Plan, timeless fashions, to unique designer wares made by local businesses, such as screen-printed fabrics, a young designer from Norwich who makes exclusive jewellery, along with hand-knitted cashmere, vintage ceramics, hand-made clothes and one-off gifts.
Sarah Hill of Deben Events, organisers of the popular market, said, “We’re really looking forward to the September market and, once again, have worked hard to ensure that we have a really interesting mix of stallholders, so whether you’ve visited our other markets or it’s your first time, there will be something to entice. We’re also having al fresco hairdressing and face-painting, so you never know what you will find.”
Fellow organiser, Jacqueline Cassidy, said, “The markets create a real buzz in Woodbridge and it’s great to see the Market Hill come alive with hundreds of visitors. It’s also interesting to see the stalls and we’re always amazed by the creative talent that exists in Suffolk, along with the unique items that people bring along to sell on the day. The markets are a great platform for small local businesses and start-ups, and also give shoppers the chance to come face-to-face with producers.”
Alongside the antiques, vintage and modern pieces, the event also features a mouth-watering selection of foods, with locally-made ingredients high on the menu. Local organic farmers, Peakhill Farm from nearby Theberton, will be bringing along their former army field kitchen, the Peakhill Canteen, selling a range of home-grown, organic roast beef. Farmer, Robert White, said, “We’re really looking forward to the September market and it’s a great way for us to get our organic products out to a local audience.”
For the September market, Deben Events has also invited Ipswich-based charity, Orwell Mencap. The charity will be bringing along their ‘Green Bike Project’, selling a range of affordable fully refurbished bicycles for adults and children. Sarah said, “They are raising money for an excellent cause and have a great selection of second-hand bikes and are doing recycling in the purest sense!”
The event is free to enter.

12 September - Waterwalk - a charity sponsored walk along the Lowestoft seafront
