Felixstroll July 4th – 5th 10.00am – 4.00 pm
Celebrate A Stroll Along Felixstowe's Wonderful Coast

Felixstroll is an exciting fun event planned for the first weekend in July 4th & 5th. It is a weekend of events and activities to get people walking, talking, laughing and exploring the coast of Felixstowe. It will celebrate Felixstowe's wonderful and diverse coastline through a range of interactive art and cultural activities. It will promote and encourage local people and visitors to walk and cycle this unique coastline.
Over the weekend, there will be a range of artists' celebratory site specific installations to see, cultural events, performances and music, activities, workshops, walks and cycle ride tours to take part in.
The art works will be placed along the path between Felixstowe Ferry and Landguard point to be discovered as people walk the coastal path. There will be a map available at the Tourist Information Centre which will guide people and give details of all the events planned for the weekend.
The event is planned to include a range of artists and art installations, including:
The Caravan Gallery at Felixstowe Ferry. The Caravan gallery shows photographs of the quirky side of the British character (see image below).

The Caravan Gallery, Suffolk

Artist Elizabeth-Jane Grose, will create a set of temporary waymarks to lead visitors around the path. Entitled About Tern!
Marie-Paule Neu, an artist from Wesel, one of Felixstowe’s twinned towns. Would like people to come along and join in creating an installation which features the coastal environment called ‘Linking Shore to Shore’ at the last beach shelters at the southern end of the Promenade. Using silk and paint, she will work with passers-by to create an abstract of the coastal environment.
An installation of colourful hand held wind mills made by Grange Primary School children working with artist Ali Peck.
A series of weather vanes incorporating images of Felixstowe made by Orwell High School pupils working with artist Valerie Osment.
An installation by Fine Art students from University Campus Suffolk in Ipswich.
People are invited to collect ‘natural’ materials found from along the route and bring them to form part of an art installation called ‘sensory squares’ by Natasha Carsberg on the cliff top by Brackenbury Fort
Fran Crowe whose work promotes Marine Conservation will be creating an installation out of litter found on the beach in a beach hut near the pier. She would like to encourage everyone to collect colourful pieces of pieces of rubbish over the weeks before the Felixstroll weekend to bring along to help build the giant artwork. Or just to come along at the weekend and see what you can find to add .She also plans to set up a stall of Felixstowe ‘souvenirs’ which people can ‘buy’ in return for a donation to the Marine Conservation Society. In addition, Fran will offer visitors the chance to make their own souvenirs with rubbish they collect from the beach (see image below).

Fran Crow, Suffolk Artist

Langer Primary School will be working with Stephen Hunt Countryside Officer who will complete a marine conservation session with the children then finish with a litter pick on the beach which will add to the materials for Frans installation. Mixing art with education.

James Fletcher will be creating at an exhibition at the Town Hall of photographs based around cafes and restaurants along the route James will also recreate the character C J Emeny, who lived and worked as a photographer in Felixstowe during the 19th and early 20th Century. James will take portrait photographs of people along the prom, outside the town hall. He will be dressed in period costume and using a camera in the style of the original glass plate camera’s. The images will then be put onto a slideshow as part of the photographic exhibition. Thus giving a snapshot of the community/population using the seaside today and pay tribute to the work by C J Emeny.
And Naomi Leake will be creating a piece of interactive performance art called 'Pedalling Ideas' - join her on an entertaining one-and-a-half hour cycle tour of the route ( please book at TIC) and other attractions!

There will also be guided themed walks, cycle hire, a children’s trail led by Storyteller Saul Jaffe entitled Gossip , Black Dogs and Rock Gods , Saul is an actor, writer and storyteller. Later this year he will be performing his one-man show, The Elephant Man, in New York as part of the Brits Off Broadway theatre festival. Meantime he continues to be storyteller at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London, where he tells the tales that inspired the Bard’s work.

There will also be face painting, strolling minstrels, a 1953 flood exhibition at Felixstowe Museum, an opportunity to record your memories in special post boxes, a Mad Hutters Tea Party competition for the beach hut owners, tours of Napoleonic Martello Tower P (book at TIC), and a free minibus along the route stopping at all art sites.

Look out for the leaflet which will be delivered to your door inside the Advertisers or pick up a leaflet form your local Tourist Information centre. Full details of the event can be found at www.suffolkcoastal.gov.uk

19th July 2009 - Picnic Jazz in Orford with Clive Carroll, Toby Allen and Ben Scarce
ADD ALT TAG HERE

Picnic Jazz in Orford this year will be presenting better value than ever in the gardens of The Pavilion behind the river wall in Orford on Sunday 19th July. The ticket price remains the same as last year at £15.00, children under 10 accompanied by an adult will be welcomed free of charge and there will be twice as much good music from the professional world of jazz.
We have been fortunate to secure the services of Clive Carroll and Toby Allen as well as a welcome return of local singer songwriter Ben Scarce.
Anyone who missed Clive’s electrifying performance in Orford Town Hall last year must make sure that they don’t miss out again. Rated as one of the most gifted guitarists around and in demand Internationally, Clive develops a rapport with his audience that has to be experienced to be believed. Toby is a young trumpeter/singer whose performances are reminiscent of the young Jamie Cullum who captivated the audience at our first Picnic Jazz event in 2003 and he will be playing with his trio.
With these performers following in the footsteps of Jamie Cullum, Victoria Newton, Jacqui Dankworth, Gwyneth Herbert, Sarah Moule, Joanna Eden and Liane Carroll we are looking forward to another quintessentially English afternoon of picnics and jazz with copious supplies of Pimms, beer and tea available in the refreshment tent in the delightful gardens of The Pavilion through Quay Street car park in Orford. If you haven’t had the opportunity to relax and enjoy this event in the past, treat yourself this year, it is a low key event that attracts a good number of the audience back year after year and it also raises funds for local good causes.
Bring a picnic and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of Orford with the very best in jazz.

Sunday 16th August
Spitfire and Hurricane set to be the stars

Are you interested in aircraft? Then the place to be on Sunday August
16th is the Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum at Flixton where Diss and District Royal Air Forces Association are organising another event.
A Spitfire and a Hurricane from the Battle of Britain Flight should be
the star turns as they fly over the museum. But there is more. Also
taking part will be an Army Air Corps Apache helicopter from Wattisham
and the search and rescue helicopter, which was the main attraction last
year when RAFA's Salute to 90 Years of the RAF attracted a crowd
estimated at 3,500.
This year is the 100th anniversary of the first flight from France to
England and RAFA will try to give the event a French flavour.
The flying programme might be affected by the weather. But there will be
plenty of things to see and do on the ground. Wing Commander Ken Wallis,
with his autogiro, which he flew in the James Bond film "You Only Live
Twice" , will be a popular attraction. RAF Honington will be taking part
with a static display and some musicians. The Air Training Corps will be
represented by cadets from the area, including the Lowestoft ATC band.
There will also be historic vehicles in addition to the many aircraft
and other exhibits which are always on show at the museum.
And the best news of all is that car parking and admission are free.
Gates open at 11pm and the action continues until 5pm. And the best news
