Woodbridge

Woodbridge is a picturesque market town that was voted by Country Living in April 2010 as one of only six top Foodie Town's in the UK. You'll soon see why when you visit Woodbridge. The market square hosts a fortnightly farmers market and there are many local farm shops nearby including Ufford Produce and Provision Co
The town lies on the River Deben. Across the river is Sutton Hoo, the Saxon Royal burial ship. In fact, everywhere you look in Woodbridge you are reminded of times gone by. It is a town that has every right to be proud of its heritage. Many of the sites are open to the public and offer a real insight into the past.
Sutton Hoo is one of these sites, managed by the National Trust and open to visitors.

The River Deben is the home to another of Woodbridge's claims to fame - the Woodbridge Tide Mill. This building is thought to be one of the earliest examples of a tide mill in the UK and dates from 1170. The mill has been restored and is now open to the public. It is seen by many as the image of Woodbridge and has inspired many artists and photographers.

Another walk down memory lane can be experienced by a visit to Martlesham Heath Control Tower. The airfield at the site was operational from 1917 to 1967 and the exhibition tells the story of the RAF based there through these years. The tower is open to the public through the Summer months.

The idyllic countryside around Woodbridge is ideal for those who love walking and you are never far away from those beautiful riverside views. There are many walks that you may choose to follow; Daisy's Walk is near to Rendlesham Forest, now fully recovered from the storm damage of the late 1980's. There are also two RSPB reserves nearby; one is RSPB Minsmere and the other is RSPB Havergate Island. Minsmere is one of the best places for Birdwatching in Suffolk.

In February 2008 Woodbridge became a Fairtrade Town so if shopping is something you enjoy then you can be assured of finding ethically traded goods on offer here. Head along the Thoroughfare - here you will find a lovely mix of small, independent shops alongside the large chain stores that you would expect to find in a town centre.

Woodbridge Antiques Centre, located between the Riverside and the Thoroughfare just two minutes walk from the railway station, is a wonderful and fascinating place to stop by and marvel at their 20-plus showcases featuring wonderful antique jewellery and household items from times gone by. You are sure to find a gem here, or the perfect gift for someone special.

Despite all the history in the town you can still be sure of a modern stay in Woodbridge. There are numerous hotels and various options for your accommodation. You will have no difficulty in finding somewhere to eat in the evening as there are tantalising restaurants and pubs in the area.
The Bull Hotel and Restaurant is very conveniently situted on the market square, in the heart of the town, and The Grove House Hotel is a charming Guest House just 15 minbutes walk from the main square.
