Woodbridge Tide Mill Living Museum

Step back in time and experience the sights, sounds and drama of the working mill, as wheels and stones turn, grinding the grain as they have done for many hundreds of years. This historic site has been home to a mill for over 800 years, harnessing the totally reliable and predictable green energy from the tides to drive a mill producing flour.

The current Woodbridge Tide Mill is 220 years old and now is once again producing genuine stoneground strong wholemeal flour. It was the last commercial working tide mill in England when it closed in 1957, but has since been fully renovated with assistance from HLF, and is now one of only two surviving tide mills in the country capable of milling flour in the traditional way.

The Mill uses traditional craft methods using the power of the tide to drive a pair of stones, operate a sack hoist, and which used to dress the flour. It is managed and maintained by volunteers, dedicated to sustain this marvellous example of a bygone era as a visitor attraction and educational resource.

This visitor attraction is a living museum has something for all of the family, with exhibition boards, interactive models, audio stations and videos, and a children’s dressing up box and games. Our website contains times of when the machinery can be viewed working, and also when it is actually milling so click through now & make a date to step back in time!

Tide Mill is open every day between Spring and Autumn between 11:00am and 5:00pm, and over the winter the Mill can be opened for arranged groups or tours – please email us for details.

Tide Mill flour can be bought throughout the year from an increasing number of local suppliers including, Suffolk Food Hall, the Cake Shop Bakery, Woodbridge Wine Company, Rainbow Apothecary, Grange Farm Shop, Poppy’s Pantry, The Sausage Shop in Kirton and J R Creasey in Peasenhall.
