Best Restaurants in Suffolk

Suffolk's Best Restaurants are located throughout the county, in towns and villages as picturesque as the food on offer. Whether it's a lite bite in Lavenham, a meander through the Suffolk Food Hall, Ipswich, or a stop for gourmet supplies at Hitchcock's Provisions in Sudbury, there are enough great places to eat to warm even the most city-bound foodie. Here's a Guide to a few of the best restaurants in Suffolk.

The service is with a smile; knowledgeable and friendly, the all French team effortlessly ensure that customers thoroughly enjoy their meal.

Lindsay House Restaurant

Lindsay House Restaurant, Eye, is a family-run restaurant providing an eclectic menu in an informal, friendly atmosphere. At Lindsay House, great emphasis is put on using only the best of local, seasonal produce. Why not bring the family for a traditional roast of locally-reared beef on Sunday Lunch? All dishes are prepared in-house - including tempting desserts such as sticky date pudding with toffee sauce, soft centred chocolate pudding or perhaps the lemon tart.

The Crown Inn

The Crown is an historic, privately owned village Inn with a reputation for making everyone feel welcome - without pretension - simply a passion for good service, food, wine and real ale.

Reopened after extensive refurbishment, the choice of dining areas promises conviviality and varying degrees of cosiness and privacy, whatever your mood. The Crown sources, wherever possible, local produce for a regularly evolving menu and fishboard.

The Crown and Castle

Good food is a core ingredient of the Crown and Castle in Orford. Part of the reason is that co-proprietor, Ruth Watson, is an award-winning food writer and a long-time contributor to Sainsbury’s Magazine and BBC Good Food. She has also written three best-selling books, The Really Helpful Cookbook, Fat Girl Slim and Something for the Weekend.

No wonder, then, that so much time and energy are devoted to sourcing wonderful local produce, and creating menus which offer interesting but not stupidly elaborate food. In the summer, you may find simple dishes such as dressed Cromer crab salad; Orford lobster with garlic butter; Snape asparagus with hollandaise sauce; or locally grown loganberries with Jersey cream, on the menu. In winter, it may be Suffolk pheasant with lentil ragout and wilted greens; slow-roast Gloucester Old Spot pork belly with mussels and shellfish broth; or hot bitter chocolate mousse.

Their restaurant, the Trinity, has a relaxed but lively ambiance. Most importantly, it neither looks nor feels like a typical hotel restaurant. With 2 AA rosettes, a Michelin bib gourmand, and good write-ups in all the major guides, guests often cite the food as a major reason for staying at The Crown and Castle. The wine list has also won many plaudits in the guides, not least for the reasonable pricing structure.

Check out the Ten Good Reasons to stay at The Crown and Castle!

Sutherland House Hotel & Restaurant

Sutherland House in Southwold is not just a fine dining establishment, it is a neighbourhood restaurant which serves local food for local people. Guests are welcome to drop in for a glass of wine and a plate of tapas (in winter) in front of the fire; a gourmet sandwich; Fresh locally caught fish served fresh and innovatively daily; home-made Black Pudding sausages and mash, or a British classic dish – or to come for a three course meal. There are affordable and more expensive dishes.

Sutherland House being in Suffolk is very fortunate to have some of the best produce, and because all our food is sourced locally, our produce is fresh and our farmers, fishermen are friends. Sutherland House has been awarded 3 gold medals for pork based products using Jimmy Butlers Blythburgh free range pork and has come 3rd overall in Best Innovative Pork Category for our Black Pudding Fritters.

Check out Sutherland House Hotel and Restaurant, Southwold for more details.

Kesgrave Hall

"Open all day so no need to rush!" - This should be the motto at Kesgrave Hall. What it simply means is that Kesgrave Hall is open throughout the day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The 100-seat restaurant certainly has plenty of theatre with an open-plan kitchen allowing diners to see exactly what goes on in the kitchen, or 'the engine room', as it's referred to on the sign!

Head Chef, Stuart Oliver, Lee O'Neil, Sous Chef and their brigade of chefs champion all that is great about Suffolk produce, plus there is a daily specials board allowing them to make full use of seasonal produce. Children are not left out and we positively encourage them - as long as they're well behaved! There's a special kid's menu available throughout the day.

Click here for more on Kesgrave Hall, Ipswich.

The Crown Hotel

An exciting and intimate combination of small hotel, wine bar, pub and restaurant, The Crown in Southwold is always buzzing with a lively informality. The food is famously good and the wine list wonderful. You don’t have to take our word for it – The Crown was named ‘Wine Pub of the Year’ by the Morning Advertiser and ‘Central & East Anglia’s Best Hotel of the Year’ by Les Routiers.

The award-winning, 350-bin wine list ranges the world from France to Australia, and includes a marvellous selection of half-bottles. The cosy Parlour is often used for a la Carte dining as well as for wonderful lunch and dinner parties.

Milsoms Hotel & Restaurant

Within three weeks of opening the restaurant was awarded an AA rosette for its cooking. In the main restaurant the seating is arranged on two levels. The terrace is very much an extension of the dining area with a huge sail canopy and heaters with the added dimension of the stunning gardens outside dining is a reality for much of the year.

An a la carte menu is available at lunch and dinner times. There are always daily specials available with the chefs taking full advantage of local and seasonal produce. In the afternoons a special ‘pm’ menu is available comprising of several items from the a la carte menu. The younger members of the family haven’t been left out at Milsoms with a specially designed menu to suit smaller appetites!
