Spend the day in Flatford, home of the beautiful 16th-century thatched Bridge Cottage, which is located in the heart of Dedham Vale
This is the location for John Constable’s famous idyllic pastoral paintings, and visitors are invited to attend exhibitions held in the cottage.
One of the best ways to experience the countryside that John Constable knew and loved is to take the Constable Country Walk around the picturesque Stour Valley. By following in the footsteps of Constable, you’ll have a better appreciation of the trees, rivers, sounds and light captured on canvas by one of the greatest British painters of all time.
Admission prices: Standard Admission Bridge Cottage: free.
Open Bank Holiday Mondays. The property may close early in winter if the weather is bad (October–January). Last admission 30 minutes before closing

Education: Suitable for school groups. Tours for school groups can be arranged on a theme of Constable’s paintings at Flatford

Shopping: NT shop with a range of Constable-related books and gifts
Refreshments: Riverside tea room next to Bridge Cottage serving teas, light lunches and homemade cakes. Kiosk open during busy periods for ice cream and snacks
Other highlights in Flatford Mill include an Annual Open Day for Valley Farmhouse in September, the Flatford Family Trail and the two Waymarked Walks (up to two miles).
Flatford Mill, Valley Farm and Willy Lott’s House are leased to the Field Studies Council, which runs arts-based courses for all age groups. For information on courses telephone 01206 298283. There is no general public access to these buildings, but the Field Studies Council will arrange tours for groups.
