Introducing “The Middy” – The only standard gauge preserved heritage railway in Suffolk
Winner of the 2015 Suffolk Museum of the Year
2012 Award-Winner of Heritage Railway Association Interpretation
The Mid-Suffolk Light Railway, nicknamed “The Middy,” was a great example of an inadequate railway that was constructed too late for the railway age. The railway was financially insolvent before it even opened, and the rails just stopped in the middle of a meadow. Nevertheless, it persevered for 50 years against all odds.
After all signs of the railway had vanished in 1991, a bunch of enthusiasts determined that this nation railway, which had been so important to the area, should not be forgotten. Now, the only standard gauge railway museum in Suffolk is once again open for business, and it is probably busier than ever before. The ‘Middy’ and Museum today offer a glimpse into how a rural railway served the community a century ago.
The history of the Middy can be seen at Brockford Station, where there are original buildings, artefacts, displays, and exhibitions. MSLR locomotives are maintained and restored on-site, in addition to an on-site MSLR museum, café, shop, and pub coach, The Kitchener Arms.
A 1/4-mile stretch of track from Brockford Station to Dovebrook allows for steam train rides in authentic Great Eastern Railway four-wheeled coaches. The route is also followed on the track-side walk of the future extension of the line, which will extend the line to over twice its current length.
There are currently three steam locomotives, which include the magnificent Cockerill Belgian tram engine, built in 1906.
