About this property
Sutton Hoo is a unique and fascinating archaeological site, described as ‘page one of English history’. In 1938 Edith Pretty hired Basil Brown to investigate some mysterious earth mounds, leading to the ultimate discovery, the remains of a 90ft ship-burial of an Anglo-Saxon warrior king. The finds included the iconic warrior’s helmet, shield, gold and silver treasures. The exhibition tells the compelling story of Anglo-Saxon warriors, treasure and kings, with a full-size reconstruction of the burial chamber. Find out how the exquisite treasure was made and lay undisturbed for more than 1,300 years.
The 99-hectare (245-acre) estate includes walks with estuary views, Suffolk Sandlings heathland and woodland trails. Also a popular site for birdwatching.
